How Long Should a Logo Take?
Realistic timelines by scope, what actually causes delay (it is almost never the drawing), and how to tell fast from rushed.
A logo alone takes anywhere from two days to six weeks. A full identity with guidelines takes three to eight weeks. The drawing is rarely what takes the time — the decision is, and so is waiting for you.
Realistic timelines by scope
- Logo only: 2 days to 2 weeks. First concepts can land within 24–36 hours of a complete brief; the rest is revision rounds.
- Logo plus basic files and variants: 1–2 weeks.
- Logo plus full brand guidelines: 3–5 weeks.
- Identity with packaging, social and print: 5–8 weeks.
- Agency engagement with research and naming: 3–6 months.
What actually causes delay
An incomplete brief. Every unanswered question becomes an assumption, and every wrong assumption becomes a revision round. An hour spent on the brief routinely saves a week.
Feedback by committee. Five people sending contradictory notes separately is the single most reliable way to double a timeline. Consolidate first — see how to give design feedback.
Slow replies. If the designer waits four days for each round of feedback, a two-week project becomes six. Most "slow designers" are actually slow approval loops.
Scope added mid-project. "Can we also do the packaging?" is a new project, not a revision.
Fast versus rushed
Fast is fine. Speed comes from a good brief, a designer who has solved similar problems, and short feedback loops. None of that reduces quality.
Rushed is different, and it shows in specific ways: only one concept, no small-size or one-colour testing, missing file variants, and no check against competitors. Those are the steps that get cut when a deadline is unrealistic — and they are exactly the steps you will pay for later.
Our first draft lands within 24–36 hours of the brief, and everything after that is agreed on the call rather than quoted as a slogan. The full sequence is on the process page.
